Trachelospermum jasminoides
Trachelospermum jasminoides, commonly known as star jasmine, is a vigorous evergreen climber with glossy, dark green leaves that are oval-shaped and leathery in texture. The leaves can take on a reddish or bronze hue in cooler temperatures. Its most distinctive feature is the profusion of small, star-shaped, pure white flowers that appear from late spring to summer, releasing a sweet, jasmine-like fragrance. The flowers are five-petaled and delicate, contrasting beautifully against the lush foliage.
Cultural
Prefers full sun to partial shade, thriving in full sun in cooler climates, while some afternoon shade is beneficial in hotter regions. It grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and can tolerate various soil types, including sandy or loamy, as long as good drainage is ensured. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but performs best with regular watering, especially during dry spells. Prune after flowering to maintain its shape and size. While generally pest-resistant, scale insects or aphids may occasionally appear, requiring attention.
Landscape Uses
Its twining habit makes it ideal for covering walls, fences, trellises, pergolas, or arbours, adding vertical interest and creating a lush, green backdrop. When allowed to spread horizontally, it forms a dense, evergreen ground cover, effectively suppressing weeds and stabilising slopes. Additionally, its highly fragrant, star-shaped flowers make it an outstanding choice for sensory or fragrance gardens.
