Magnolia x alba
An attractive evergreen tree that is extremely popular throughout South East Asia where it is said to bring good luck. From Spring to Autumn Michelia x alba produces highly perfumed cream coloured flowers. The fragrance is magnificent, and for this reason it is used extensively in the perfume industry as an essential oil.
Cultural
These prefer a moist, fertile and well drained soil that is slightly acidic, so when planting it helps if the position has been prepared that way. A warm, sunny aspect is best, though they do tolerate partial shade, and some protection from strong winds will help. Winter is a good time to prune to shape if required, and it will tolerate being cut back hard if necessary. As this plant is native to sub tropical areas it requires some frost protection. We advise an annual application of good quality general fertiliser in Spring, and mulching and watering during the drier months especially when the plant is establishing itself.
Landscape Uses
It has a strong upright growth habit and will make an excellent specimen tree, with its lime-green foliage providing good colour contrast in the garden. The perfume from its flowers will drift about in the air so it is a great one for planting around entertaining areas or close to the home. Place in a Protected Position.
