Alstroemeria, commonly known as the Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, is a striking perennial known for its vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers. The blooms feature six petals, often marked with unique streaks, speckles, or contrasting colour patterns. Alstroemeria flowers come in a wide range of hues, including shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, purple, and white. The plant has lush, lance-shaped leaves that grow along upright, slightly twisting stems.

Cultural

Alstroemeria thrives in a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained, fertile soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support flowering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Encourage continuous blooming by removing spent flowers—gently grab the stems close to the ground and pull; the entire stem should come away from the base. In colder climates, some varieties may die back in winter and reshoot in spring. Protect from strong winds and monitor for common pests like aphids and slugs.

Landscape Uses

Alstroemeria is ideal for garden borders, cottage gardens, and mass plantings, providing a long-lasting display of vibrant colour. It also makes an excellent cut flower and thrives in containers, adding elegance to patios and balconies.
