Acer japonicum 'Vitifolium'
'Vitifolium' is a beautiful small, vased shaped deciduous tree with large, deeply lobed leaves resembling grape foliage. The leaves are lush green throughout spring and summer, creating a dense, leafy canopy. In autumn, they transform into a spectacular display of vivid red, orange, and yellow hues. The tree also produces small, delicate clusters of red flowers in spring, which give way to decorative winged seeds (samaras) in late summer.
Cultural
Thrives best in a partially shaded, sheltered position to protect its foliage from scorching sun and strong winds, although it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It prefers well-draining, moist, and fertile soil. Minimal pruning is required; however, dead or damaged branches can be removed in late winter while the tree is dormant.
Landscape Uses
Its lush, large leaves and dramatic autumn colour make it an excellent focal point in garden beds, woodland gardens, or as an ornamental specimen in mixed borders. Its vase shape and elegant branching structure add depth and interest to Japanese-style or naturalistic landscapes. 'Vitifolium' is also suitable for smaller spaces due to its compact size, and it works well in partially shaded courtyards or as a backdrop for shade-loving perennials.
