Helichrysum petiolare, commonly known as the Licorice Plant, is characterized by its soft, trailing stems covered in small, rounded leaves. The leaves are a striking silver-grey colour with a velvety texture that catches the light, giving the plant a subtle shimmer. The plant's growth habit is low and spreading. It may produce small, inconspicuous clusters of pale-yellow flowers in summer, though these are not the main attraction.

Cultural

Thrives in a full sun to part shade position, with increased sunlight intensifying its silver-grey foliage. Performs best in well-drained soils and can adapt to poor, sandy, or rocky conditions, though it's important to avoid waterlogged areas. Once established, the plant is drought tolerant. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its shape and promote dense, compact growth.

Landscape Uses

Is great for providing contrast with its silver-grey foliage, complementing more vibrant flowers and plants. Topiary balls work well when planted in clusters or used in pots to frame an entrance or walkway. Its salt tolerance makes it suitable for coastal settings, where it pairs nicely with other coastal favorites such as Correa alba, Acacia cognata 'Copper Tips,' and Lomandra longifolia 'Tanika' pbr.
