Acer palmatum Dissectum 'Inaba Shidare' Standard
Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, straight stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. 'Inaba Shidare' standards have a gracefully weeping, cascading growth habit. The leaves are finely dissected, giving them a delicate, lace-like appearance. They are deep red or burgundy throughout the growing season, turning to vibrant shades of crimson and scarlet in autumn. The bare branches in winter also offer an attractive, sculptural quality.
Cultural
Japanese Maples thrive in partial shade to full sun, though they often prefer dappled shade, especially in hotter climates. Protection from harsh afternoon sun is recommended to prevent leaf scorch. They prefer slightly moist, fertile soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased branches, shape the tree, and improve air circulation. Avoid heavy pruning, especially on mature trees, as this can lead to stress and loss of form. They may occasionally be affected by aphids, scale insects, or fungal diseases such as powdery mildew.
Landscape Uses
Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
Dimensions
The length of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but it will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning.
