Camellia sasanqua 'Jennifer Susan' Cloud
A cloud tree features a single plant with a series of cleared stems topped by rounded canopies, resembling clouds. Traditionally found in Chinese and Japanese gardens, these striking trees have become popular across various garden styles. With their unique silhouette, cloud trees make a bold statement and serve as an exceptional focal point in any landscape. 'Jennifer Susan' is a charming variety of Camellia sasanqua, featuring delicate, semi-double blooms with soft pink petals and golden stamens. The glossy, dark green foliage provides an elegant backdrop to the profusion of blooms, creating a stunning display in the autumn to winter months.
Cultural
Camellia sasanqua prefer a position in full sun to partial shade, thriving in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. While they favour acidic conditions, sasanquas will tolerate other soil types as long as there is good drainage. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain healthy growth. In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants to encourage new growth. Light pruning is recommended after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or diseased wood, ensuring not to cut off developing buds. Keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale insects, and take appropriate measures to manage them.
Landscape Uses
Cloud trees are sure to wow viewers; their impressive form and structure make them the ideal feature tree. They are perfect specimens for pots but also work well when planted directly in the ground. Traditionally clipped for Chinese and Japanese style gardens, cloud trees are now used in many different garden styles, including formal, modern, and eclectic. Their clear trunks create space for lower underplantings such as grasses and groundcovers.
