Bergenia schmidti’s large, smooth, glossy leaves provide a backdrop for the pink clusters of bell-shaped flowers, sitting atop their reddish stems.

Cultural

Bergenia thrives in full sun to partial shade and grows best in moist, well-drained soil. It can adapt to various soil types, including clay and sandy soils, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. After flowering, remove spent flower stalks to maintain a neat appearance, and trim any damaged or discoloured leaves as needed. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new growth. For optimal growth, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Generally pest-free, it may occasionally be affected by slugs and snails.

Landscape Uses

A fantastic ground cover, perfect for cottage, formal, coastal and rock gardens. Works wonderfully as a border plant, on banks or slopes or as an under planting. Looks great planted under Lagertsroemia or amongst Euphorbia and Lavender.
