Pyrus communis 'Packhams Triumph' Espalier
An attractive pear tree with medium to large fruit, with a greenish-yellow skin that may have slight russeting or a red blush, the flesh inside is white, juicy, and sweet with a slightly grainy texture. In spring, the tree produces abundant clusters of small, white blossoms, attracting bees and other pollinators. Harvest pears in mid-autumn when they are firm but mature. They often require ripening off the tree for the best flavour.
Cultural
Prefers a full sun position in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods and while the fruit is developing. Annual pruning in late winter or early spring helps maintain the tree's shape, remove dead or diseased branches, and encourage good air circulation. To ensure optimal growth, apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture. It's important to monitor for common pear pests and diseases such as pear scab, fire blight, and codling moth. While partially self-fertile and capable of fruiting on its own, cross-pollination with another pear variety that flowers at the same time will enhance fruit set.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for limited spaces, espaliered Pyrus allows for apple growing without requiring extensive ground area. They look fantastic when trained against walls or fences, creating a visually appealing vertical garden element. Additionally, they can frame doorways or entrances, adding both charm and productivity to the landscape.
