Laurus nobilis 'Miles Choice' Corkscrew Standard
Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. Our 'Corkscrew' standards feature a trunk that has been trained as a spiral adding dramatic effect. Laurus nobilis 'Miles Choice' features glossy, dark green leaves that are aromatic. The leaves of 'Miles Choice' are typically smaller and more abundant than those of the traditional bay, giving the plant a lush and full appearance. It produces yellow flowers between September to October, adding to its overall appeal.
Cultural
Thrives in a full sun to part shade position, preferring well-drained, fertile soil. While it tolerates a range of soil types, it performs best in conditions that provide good drainage. Once established, 'Miles Choice' has a low water requirement, making it relatively drought tolerant. However, regular watering is beneficial, especially during extended dry periods or while the plant is still young. To support healthy growth, apply a long-term, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This variety responds well to pruning, allowing it to be kept smaller if needed. Although generally resistant to pests and diseases, it is advisable to check occasionally for common pests like scale insects and to treat them if necessary.
Landscape Uses
Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
Dimensions
The length of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but it will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning.
