Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, straight stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. In spring, Malus sargentii is covered in clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that appear abundantly, creating a striking contrast against the glossy, deep green foliage. Following the bloom, the tree produces small, red to orange crabapples that are ornamental and persist into winter, adding seasonal interest and attracting birds. The leaves, which are small and oval to elliptical, transition to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn, enhancing the tree’s appeal throughout the year. Our Malus trees are grafted for optimal growing performance.

Cultural

Prefers a full sun position for optimal flowering and fruiting. It thrives in well-drained soil and adapts to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or diseased wood. Monitor for common pests such as aphids and spider mites, and be vigilant for diseases like apple scab and powdery mildew. Ensuring good air circulation and avoiding overhead watering can help minimise disease risk.

Landscape Uses

Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.

Dimensions

The length of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but it will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning.
Standard heights may vary. Please see TRADE PRICE LIST for topiary specifications.
