Elettaria cardamomum
Elettaria cardamomum, commonly known as green cardamom, is a perennial plant in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. In summer, it produces white flowers with violet accents, followed by the development of cardamom seed pods. These seeds are highly prized as a spice in Indian and other Asian cuisines.
Cultural
Preferring a part-shade position with well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter, Elettaria cardamomum enjoys a moist environment and is suitable for temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical climates. Pods are harvested just before they fully mature. After harvesting, the pods are dried in the sun or using artificial drying methods. Store dried pods in airtight containers away from direct sunlight to maintain flavor and aroma.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for planting under larger trees in mass or mixed with other tropical plants. Will add a structural element to the garden with its vertical growth habit. It also grows well in pots and containers. With its attractive foliage and edible seed pods, it enhances garden settings while providing both ornamental and functional value.
