Olea europaea 'Del Morocco' Standard
Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, straight stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. 'Del Morocco' is a Moroccan olive variety known for its rich and robust flavour and high-quality oil. This long-lived, slow-growing tree has silver-grey foliage and a gnarled grey trunk that becomes more striking with age. It produces small white flowers in spring, followed by green fruit that ripens to black in autumn. The olives are small to medium, weighing 3-4g, with early fruiting and high yields.
Cultural
Full sun is essential for healthy growth and fruit production in olive trees. They thrive in slightly alkaline, sandy, or loamy soils, though they can tolerate poor, rocky conditions. Once established, olive trees are drought-tolerant, but young trees require regular watering, especially during dry periods and during flowering and fruit production, particularly in containers. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead branches. While generally hardy, olive trees can be susceptible to pests like scale and fungal diseases. Olives are typically harvested in late autumn to early winter.
Landscape Uses
Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
