A compact clump-forming evergreen perennial with clusters of pristine white, bell shaped flowers which rise above the foliage in early spring on vertical stems. Leaves are shiny, round and leathery, foliage is green developing bronze tinges in winter.

Cultural

Bergenia thrives in full sun to partial shade and grows best in moist, well-drained soil. It can adapt to various soil types, including clay and sandy soils, but does not tolerate waterlogging. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. After flowering, remove spent flower stalks to maintain a neat appearance, and trim any damaged or discoloured leaves as needed. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate the plant and encourage new growth. For optimal growth, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Generally pest-free, it may occasionally be affected by slugs and snails.

Landscape Uses

Ideal for mass plantings, Bergenia creates a bold, low-maintenance groundcover that provides year-round interest. Its broad, evergreen leaves make it an excellent choice for edging pathways, borders, and garden beds. Well-suited to container gardening, it offers seasonal colour with its vibrant blooms and striking winter foliage.
