Asparagus densiflorus 'Myersii'
The bright and attractive evergreen Asparagus densiflorus Myersii, otherwise known as Foxtail Fern, is a fantastic groundcover and also looks great in hanging baskets. It's needle-like leaves on long narrow stems give it the appearance of a foxtail, hence its common name.
Cultural
This perennial plant prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained, humus rich soil. It’s hardy in nature and drought resistant and will not need extensive care aside from a low water requirement. Fertilise during the growing season with an organic fertiliser. In Summer, expect a large number of pink and/or white flowers to form which will mature into red berries in Autumn. These berries are toxic to humans and not to be ingested.
CAUTION: This plant is a declared weed in some states and is considered highly invasive. Ensure the plant is controlled if planted and disposed of appropriately.
Landscape Uses
Foxtail Fern can be planted both in the ground or in containers. Hanging baskets are a popular option for it, as well as for a groundcover plant as its dense fern-like foliage provides an attractive and unusual texture.
