A robust, clump-forming perennial succulent, 'Autumn Joy' features fleshy, blue-green leaves that create a dense, upright mound. In late summer to autumn, it produces large, flat clusters of tiny star-shaped flowers that begin as soft pink buds, gradually transforming into rich, deep red as they mature. The flower heads contrast beautifully with the foliage, and as they age, they turn a bronze hue.

Cultural

This hardy, low-maintenance plant thrives in a variety of soil types and is ideally suited to full sun, though it will also tolerate partial shade. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering with a liquid fertiliser during summer. To maintain its tidy appearance, prune back old, dying foliage in mid to late autumn, cutting as close to the base as possible to allow fresh growth to emerge. It can withstand light frosts.

Landscape Uses

Perfect for rock gardens, dry borders, and succulent plantings due to its compact size and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils. It works beautifully in mixed perennial beds, adding texture and colour with its frosty blooms. Its drought tolerance makes it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens and coastal landscapes, and it also serves as a striking accent plant in container arrangements.
