Camellia japonica 'Bob Hope'
'Bob Hope' produces large, semi-double to double blooms in a vibrant, deep red colour. The flowers have a soft, velvety texture with a subtle sheen and are complemented by rich yellow stamens that are highly visible against the petals. Typically ranging from 8 to 12cm in diameter, the blooms appear from late winter to early spring, adding a striking touch of colour during the cooler months.
Cultural
Camellia japonica prefers a sheltered location with partial shade, avoiding direct afternoon sun that can scorch its leaves and flowers. It thrives in environments protected from strong winds. This plant does best in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5, though it will tolerate other soil types if drainage is adequate. Regular watering is crucial, particularly during dry periods, as Camellias do not handle drought well. In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants to support new growth. Light pruning is recommended to maintain the plant's shape and remove any unwanted growth. Camellias can occasionally be affected by pests like aphids, spider mites, or scale insects, so monitoring for these pests is advisable.
Landscape Uses
A versatile plant with several valuable landscape uses. Its elegant flowers and glossy foliage make it an attractive feature plant in garden beds or borders. When planted in a row, it can form a dense, evergreen hedge or screen, providing privacy and shelter while adding year-round greenery. It is also well-suited to container planting, making it a great choice for patios, balconies, and courtyards, where it can be showcased as a potted specimen. Its classic beauty and long flowering season complement traditional and cottage-style gardens, and it pairs beautifully with Azalea, Pieris, and Helleborus.
