Camellia sasanqua 'Asakura'
A charming evergreen shrub known for its delicate, semi-double to double flowers. In late autumn to early winter, it produces a profusion of white blooms with a hint of pink on their edges. The slightly frilled flowers offer a gentle contrast against the dark green, glossy foliage.
Cultural
Camellia sasanqua prefer a position in full sun to partial shade, thriving in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. While they favour acidic conditions, sasanquas will tolerate other soil types as long as there is good drainage. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, to maintain healthy growth. In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants to encourage new growth. Light pruning is recommended after flowering to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or diseased wood, ensuring not to cut off developing buds. Keep an eye out for common pests such as aphids, spider mites, and scale insects, and take appropriate measures to manage them.
