A tall narrow fastigiate deciduous tree, with distinctive two-lobed foliage. Leaves change from a deep green to golden yellow in autumn and tend to fall rapidly creating a golden bed around the base. Steeped in cultural history the Ginkgo is one of the oldest species of trees on the planet and is often referred to as a "living fossil" with some living samples over 2500 years old.

Cultural

Ginkgo biloba thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, though it is highly adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant, but regular watering during the early years encourages deep root development. Minimal pruning is required; however, if necessary, it’s best done in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or poorly positioned branches to maintain its natural shape. Exceptionally hardy, Ginkgo tolerates a wide range of temperatures and is highly resistant to pests, diseases, and urban pollution, making it an ideal choice for city environments.

Landscape Uses

Ginkgo biloba 'Piedmont Pillar' is an ideal choice for landscape design due to its spectacular autumn foliage and low-maintenance nature. Whether planted as a single feature or in a copse, its upright form and vibrant autumn colors make it a striking focal point in any setting.
