Magnolia grandiflora 'Exmouth'
An upright and dependable variety of Magnolia grandiflora, characterized by glossy green leaves and a conical growth habit. It produces large, creamy-white, fragrant flowers during the warmer months and blooms from an early age. The underside of its leaves has a contrasting rusty-brown colour.
Cultural
Magnolias prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. When planting, it's beneficial to prepare the soil accordingly. A full sun position is best, though they do tolerate partial shade. Providing some protection from strong winds is also helpful. Prune to shape in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. We recommend an annual application of high-quality fertilizer in spring, along with mulching and watering during the drier months, especially while the plant is establishing itself. Once established in the landscape, 'Exmouth' is a very resilient plant, capable of enduring heat and light frost. It is also relatively pest and disease-free.
Landscape Uses
This variety is reasonably quick-growing and is a good choice for pleaching, tall screening, or as a specimen tree. It can also be grown effectively in large containers. It is a great choice for cottage and formal gardens. Plant with other classics such as Camellias and Hydrangeas.
