Aucuba japonica 'Variegata'
Commonly known as the gold dust plant, the Aucuba japonica ‘Variegata’ is a compact shrub with lush glossy green foliage dappled with golden speckles. When plants of both sexes are planted in close vicinity the females will produce red fruit which will remain on the plant through winter. Native to China, Korea and Japan.
Cultural
Able to tolerate shade but prefers a dappled light, does not respond well to being in a full sun position as foliage will burn in the warmer months. Prefers a well-drained but moist fertile soil yet can tolerate dry periods. Prune in spring to promote new growth. Is susceptible to scale.
Landscape Uses
Great for medium sized understory plantings. Perfect for tropical or Japanese themed gardens. Works well in pots and can be used as an indoor plant if situated near a window with low to medium light. Plant with other lush flora such as Magnolia alba and Elaeocarpus eumundi.
