Magnolia grandiflora 'Teddy Bear'™ pbr
A compact evergreen tree with a dense, upright, pyramidal shape. The large, leathery, oval-shaped leaves are glossy dark green on top with a distinctive velvety, rust-brown underside. New foliage emerges as a rich coppery-brown, adding a warm contrast. Large, creamy-white flowers with a waxy texture bloom from late spring to early summer, with sporadic blooms continuing into autumn. The flowers are strongly fragrant, with a sweet lemony scent.
Cultural
Magnolias prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. When planting, it's beneficial to prepare the soil accordingly. A full sun position is best, though they do tolerate partial shade. Providing some protection from strong winds is also helpful. Prune to shape in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. We recommend an annual application of high-quality fertilizer in spring, along with mulching and watering during the drier months, especially while the plant is establishing itself. Once established in the landscape, 'Teddy Bear' is a very resilient plant, capable of enduring heat and light frost. It is also relatively pest and disease-free.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for use as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or as a screening plant. Its compact size makes it perfect for urban gardens, patios, and large containers. It is best suited to informal screens rather than a clipped hedge due to its large, rounded, leathery leaves. Great for formal and modern gardens, underplant with Murraya paniculata for foliage contrast and a contemporary look.
