Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'
One of our most popular plants, 'Little Gem,' is an outstanding variety of Magnolia grandiflora. It is a compact-growing, evergreen small tree, which, due to its smaller size, is perfectly suited to the home garden. It produces large, creamy white, cup-shaped flowers that can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. These blooms are fragrant and appear throughout the summer, often starting as early as late spring. Its leaves are glossy, and dark green on the upper side, with a contrasting rusty-brown underside.
Cultural
Magnolias prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. When planting, it's beneficial to prepare the soil accordingly. A full sun position is best, though they do tolerate partial shade. Providing some protection from strong winds is also helpful. Prune to shape in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. We recommend an annual application of high-quality fertilizer in spring, along with mulching and watering during the drier months, especially while the plant is establishing itself. Once established in the landscape, 'Litte Gem' is a very resilient plant, capable of enduring heat and light frost. It is also relatively pest and disease-free.
Landscape Uses
Its compact size and beautiful blooms make it an excellent focal point in smaller gardens. Additionally, the dense foliage and upright growth habit make it suitable for creating natural screens or hedges for privacy. 'Little Gem' also provides a perfect backdrop for garden beds. It is a great choice for cottage and formal gardens. Plant with other classics such as Camellias and Hydrangeas.
