Camellia sasanqua 'Paradise Blush' Standard
Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, straight stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. From late autumn to early winter, it produces an abundance of semi-double blooms with delicate white petals edged in a soft pink blush. The dense, glossy dark green foliage provides a rich backdrop that enhances the beauty of the vibrant flowers.
Cultural
Camellia sasanqua prefers a position in full sun to partial shade, thriving in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Enriching the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, helps improve drainage and soil structure. Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring to support new growth. Light pruning is recommended to maintain the plant’s shape and remove any dead or diseased wood, ideally after flowering to avoid cutting off developing buds. Watch for common pests, including aphids, spider mites, and scale insects.
Landscape Uses
Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
Dimensions
The length of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but it will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning.
