Azalea 'Hatsu Giri'
Abundant purple funnel-shaped flowers with dark green foliage adds colour to formal gardens.
Will grow in full sun or part shade with Summer watering. Hardy once established. Plant in a well drained, humus-rich soil that’s slightly acidic. Fertilise in Spring and late Summer with an Azalea specific fertiliser or a complete organic fertiliser. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulch well during extended dry periods. If flowers are turning mushy this could be a sign of Azalea Petal Blight. Pick off any spent flowers and treat with appropriate fungicides. Azaleas are also susceptible to insect attack. Treat with appropriate insecticides. Growing Azaleas in ideal conditions will help prevent any problems.
Use in garden beds as a free- flowering carpet under trees. Great in pots in courtyards or entertaining areas. Kurumes are used in Japanese style gardens where they are clipped into flowering mounds. Plant with other Japanese style plants like Maples, Camellia sasanqua, Pieris and Mondo Grass.
